Recent Advances for Vaccine Production in Plants Using Geminiviruses

Plants are utilized as a cheap, safe, and efficacious production platform for vaccines and other therapeutic proteins in lowincome
countries that do not have access to modern medicine. A simple way to rapidly produce high-level pharmaceutical
proteins in plants is to use plant virus expression vectors because their genomes are small and easily manipulated. This
study discusses several plant expression systems based on geminiviruses that have been widely developed for vaccine
generation and other industrial proteins, as well as recent advances in this field are also presented. Most plant viruses that
have been engineered as expression vectors to generate vaccines and other pharmaceutical proteins have RNA-positive
genomes, and DNA-based viral vectors are less commonly used because their genomes have a restricted capacity to carry
