COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2, a coronavirus) continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality as well as profound
stress on the healthcare systems around the world. In addition to its ability to cause fatal acute hypoxemic respiratory
failure, and prolonged recovery times, patients with COVID-19 often require protracted inpatient stays; further
