Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn

Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) is a blood disorder in a fetus or newborn infant and major cause is fetal loss and death among newborn babies. Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) is also called as erythroblastosis fetalis. More occurs during a mother's second or subsequent pregnancy.

Hemolytic disease of the newborn may develop when a mother and her unborn baby have different blood group types, the mother produces substances called antibodies that attack the developing baby's red blood cells. Most common form of hemolytic disease of the newborn is ABO incompatibility and least common form is Rh incompatibility. Hemolytic disease of the newborn can destroy the newborn baby's blood cells which can cause Edema and Newborn jaundice. Diagnosis tests depend on the type of blood group incompatibility and the severity of symptoms. Treatment of Haemolytic disease of the newborn is Blood transfusions after birth and for mild Haemolytic disease of the newborn is treated with drugs like antihistamines, steroids, hydration, Light therapy and some medications to raise blood pressure.
