Dental Traumatology

Dental trauma related to the trauma or injury to the teeth and/or periodontium, may be gums, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and nearby soft tissues including lips and tongue. The study of these injuries is dealt in Dental traumatology.

Dental trauma is relatively common and can occur secondary to falls, fights, sporting injuries, or motor vehicle accidents. A study sought to determine whether oral cavity cancers occurred more commonly at sites of dental trauma. The study concluded that oral cavity cancers occur predominantly at sites of potential dental and denture trauma, especially in nonsmokers without other risk factors.
