Yield performance of cabbage hybrids under rainfed mid-hill condition of Uttarakhand

Abstract:

In order to evaluate the yield performance of some of the newly developed cabbage hybrids under rainfed mid hill condition of Uttarakhand, an investigation was carried out during rainy season of 2011 at the research unit of Department of Vegetable Science, College of Forestry & Hill Agriculture, Hill Campus, Ranichauri (G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology) Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Dur - ing the study, observations for stalk length and diameter, leaf circumference and leaf area, number of non-wrapper leaves and their weight, plant spread, number of whorls per plant, head size and weight, marketable maturity, head compactness, ascorbic acid and yield were recorded. In addition, to assess the profitability of the crop, net profit per unit area and Benefit-Cost ratio had also been worked out. The findings of investigation revealed that amongst 12 hybrids, hybrid Green Star was proved the best with respect to disease and pest resistancy, ascorbic acid content, head yield and profitability. The yield of this hybrid was 389.99q ha -1 and was 36.44 % higher than the standard check Varun. This hybrid had given a net profit of Rs. 69,935.00/ha along with Benefit-Cost ratio of 1.55. Besides, the other new hybrids which were also found promising in marketable yield and profitability along with least incidence of diseases were F 1 -Pragati and T-50. Based on overall performance of the different hybrids, it could be concluded that under the prevalent climatic conditions of rainfed mid-hill Uttarakhand, Green Star is the most suited hybrid, hence the same is recommended for farmers commercial cultivation, provided all scientific management practices are followed.

The author was born on October 29, 1991 at Rudrapur, Uttarakhand. She passed her High School from and Intermediate examinations in 2004 and 2007, respectively from C.B.S.E Board. After completing B.Sc. (Life Sciences) from D.S.B Campus, Kumaun University, Nainital, 2010, she joined G.B.Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, District, U.S.Nagar for M.Sc. (Ag.) Degree programme in Vegetable Science.
