Abstract:

Uncommon stroke syndromes continue to pose a diagnostic and management dilemma for patients and neurologists. These commonly occur in young adults and can affect their quality of life if not managed appropriately and put them at risk for recurrent strokes. These are commonly referred to as ???Cryptogenic strokes???. We shall describe the standard etiological work up for ischemic stroke in United States followed by some of the diagnostic clues on history and physical examination leading physicians to think about the uncommon stroke syndromes such as CNS vasculitis- infectious or non-infectious, Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), Moyamoya disease etc. Once an uncommon syndrome is identified, we shall discuss the appropriate management strategy including secondary stroke prevention.
