Treatment of unilateral class II malocclusion with unilateral fixed functional appliance: Report of a case

Abstract:

Children with unilateral Class II or Class III malocclusion are extremely difficult to treat. However, with proper appliance design and planning, orthodontist could get quite good results. Our patient was a 11.3 years old boy at S period of skeletal maturation. Extraorally, patient had a convex profile, upper and lower midlines was symmetric to midline of the face. Intraorally, class II canine and molar relations were observed on both sides. Overjet and overbite measured 6 mm and 4 mm, respectively. Arch discrepancies were observed 4 mm on maxilla and 3 mm on mandible. On the first stage of the treatment, patient treated with activator and after that, during the treatment with fixed appliances, a relapse occurred on left side of the patient. Then, the unilateral class II malocclusion was treated with unilateral fixed functional appliance. At the end of the treatment, Class I dental and skeletal occlusion and a nearly straight soft tissue profile were achieved. Patient was examined after 1 years of retention period. The results achieved by the treatment were stable.

Biography :

Ahmet Yalcin Gungor has completed his PhD from Suleyman Demirel and Post-doctoral studies from Mustafa Kemal and Akdeniz Universities, School of Dentistry. He worked as Director of Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Akdeniz. He has published more than 25 papers in reputed journals.
