Abstract:

Nanotechnology has become one of the most promising new approaches for pest control in recent years. Silica nanoparticles were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope, X-ray Diffraction and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. Characterization studies showed silica nanoparticles of size range 20-30 nm were synthesized which are spherical in shape and amorphous in nature. Solanaceous plants have a great economic impact in Egypt. These groups of plants include potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants. The new invasive pest of tomatoes, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) causes the greatest crop losses which can range from 60 to 100%. After its detection in Egypt during the last half of 2009, it spread quickly to all provinces in the country. Tuta absoluta has recently become one of the most devastating pests of tomato in Egypt. In our screening program, field trials were conducted to determine the effectiveness of silica nanoparticles and fipronil insecticide in controlling Tuta absoluta. Field studies were conducted on 2017 in Nobaria zone, Elbohira governorate, Egypt to determine the effectiveness of the tested tools with their respective rates per 100 liters of water were: silica nanoparticles 1.0, 3.0 and 5.0 g. a.i.; fipronil 10.0, 15.0 and 20.0 g. a.i. and fipronil loaded on silica nanoparticles 5.0 7.50 and 10.0 g. a.i. The experiment was designed as randomized complete block with 4 replications per treatment. Trials were evaluated daily. All tested treatments, were effective to control T. absoluta. Considering the pest complex, fipronil loaded on silica nanoparticles at 10.0 g a.i. was the best treatment causing 100% reduction after 7 days.
