Abstract:

Resistance to anti-microbial drugs, especially antibiotics is the major hazard in therapeutics. Microbial cultures have been used for thousands of years in food and alcoholic fermentations and the past century have undergone scientific scrutiny for their ability to prevent and cure a variety of diseases. Probiotics is the term used to describe the substances ??secreted by one microorganism which stimulated the growth of another. It has the activity just opposite of antibiotics. This work aims at the synergistic effect of probiotics and β-lactam antibiotic against selected human pathogens. The primary objective of this work was to isolate probiotics from different samples. Study of β-lactam antibiotic sensitivity of probiotics was carried out along with the evaluation of their anti-bacterial activity. Further study involved synergistic effect of probiotics with β-lactam antibiotics against human pathogens. Aspect of synergism can be applied to cure diseases by inhibition of pathogens.
