In this lecture, we will discuss the concepts of translational academic radiology, use cases for implementing innovation, and the future of medical imaging & health care. The RDI concept will be applied to medical imaging, covering the nature of disruptive technologies, team science and the adjacent possible. We will review the imaging care cycle and infrastructure necessary to promote translational imaging and precision health. Real-life applications of artificial intelligence and informatics in radiology will be presented, including upstream and downstream AI, quantitative imaging, radiomics and deep learning. We will introduce the emerging big data concepts of imaging genomics, multiomics and theranostics. Finally, we look to the future of health care and the 5th Industrial Revolution with advances in clinical care, quality and safety, education and global health. By continuing to drive forward innovation and humanmachine collaborations, we will move toward the ultimate goals of preventative, population and value-based care.
Mai-Lan Ho, MD, is director of the Advanced Neuroimaging Core, chair of the Asian Pacific American Network, and clinical associate professor of Radiology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Ho completed her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering at Stanford University, graduate training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and medical school at Washington University in St. Louis. She then pursued a diagnostic radiology residency in the Scholar’s Track at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, with mini-fellowships in body MRI and musculoskeletal radiology. Following pediatric and head/neck imaging experience at Boston Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Dr. Ho completed her neuroradiology training and a chief fellowship in pediatric neuroradiology at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Ho is a principal investigator and coinvestigator funded by multiple foundation, industry and federal research grants. She is the lead author of the textbook Neuroradiology Signs and has editorial experience with major journals, as well as multiple scientific abstracts and publications. Dr. Ho also holds committee appointments in several subspecialty organizations and is highly active in global medical outreach.
