Abstract:

Biofilm infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa are the major cause of premature death associated with cystic fibrosis. Strategies to induce biofilm dispersal are of interest due to their potential to prevent biofilm-related infections. We previously showed that n-butanolic Cyclamen coum extract in combination with ciprofloxacin removed one and three daysold biofilms. Here, we compared protein expression in P. aeruginosa PAO1 treated and untreated biofilms by 2-DE method. According to 2-DE results, proteins which were involved in alginate biosynthesis, quorum sensing, adaptation, carbon and amino acid metabolism were weakly expressed in n-butanolic C. coum extract ciprofloxacin treated biofilm cells. It seems likely that, combined exposure to both n-butanolic C. coum extract and antimicrobial agents such as ciprofloxacin may offer a novel strategy to control pre-established, persistent P. aeruginosa biofilms and biofilm-related infections.
