Abstract:

Terrace garden or roof garden is any garden on the roof top. Besides decorative benefit, roof plantings may provide fresh hor - ticultural produce, temperature control, hydrological benefits, architectural enhancement, habitats or corridor for wildlife, and recreational opportunities. According to Housing development authority of India almost 90 % of all the houses constructed under Indira Gandhi Niwas Yojana have flat roof tops (105 ft 2 ). Well these can be effectively brought for aesthetic purpose. Estab - lishing a roof top garden is eco-friendly and thus can reduce temperatures by 4-5 o C thus reducing the cooler and air-conditioners utility. Roof gardening industry can be effective in masking the paucity in vegetable availability in populous nations like India. Besides these behoves, a roof garden also helps make the building naturally aesthetic. No much technology and modern briefings are required for establishing a terrace garden except for PVC coated roof top and can be followed as a hobby by many garden amateurs. Much of the shallow rooted crops can be easily grown above the roof tops while utilising the runoffs, filtered sewage discharges and organic kitchen wastes. Thus roof gardening can be shortcut for urban greening any nation well in advance while increasing horticultural yield.

Biography :

Surendranath R. has completed his B.Sc (Horticulture) at the age of 22 from Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Agricultural University and M.Sc (Horticulture) studies in Floriculture and Landscape gardening from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. He has carried research project on tissue culture aspects of ornamental crops under the guidance of Dr. M. Ganga, Assistant Professor in Horticulture.
