Abstract:

Study of Rheological properties of HIPOLY based drilling fluid for High Pressure and High Temperature wells: Drilling operations at deep and ultra-deep depths face a wide range of difficult challenges. Amongst those challenges, maintaining rheological properties of drilling fluid and controlling fluid loss at high pressure high temperature conditions is a great issue. Due to high pressure and temperature drilling fluid degrades in deep wells that cause problem in drilling operation. Hence, Keeping the integrity and rheological properties of drilling fluid unchanged in high pressure and high temperature wells is a matter of concern for drilling engineers. This research-based study involves HIPOLY polymer as an additive to drilling fluid to overcome issue of thermal degradation of drilling fluid at elevated pressure and temperature. A polymer namely HIPOLY is suggested to be used that maintains its originality up to 180 oC. Unlike organic polymer that are previously used as drilling fluid additives, this polymer serves as thermal resistive polymer. Therefore, the implementation of Hipoly in drilling fluid will function as fluid loss agent and viscosifier that improves the API property of drilling fluid up to 180 ⁰C. Such effectiveness and functionality will result in overall performance of drilling fluid under HPHT conditions. In this research, rheological parameters of HIPOLY based drilling fluid samples at eight different concentrations were determined. Experiments were carried out to observe for changes not only in rheological parameters like viscometer readings, but also in mud weight, pH, fluid loss and filtration cake. Experiments were performed for each mixture to reduce the experimental errors and to see the repeatability. It was found that HIPOLY based drilling fluid show promising results. The Rheological properties like Plastic viscosity, yield point and gel strength remained effective even at high temperature. Likewise, fluid loss was also minimum. Therefore, HIPOLY based drilling mud does not degrade entirely at elevated temperature but it shows outstanding performance under High temperature conditions.
