A new Pt-Al2O3 double cermet selective solar absorber coating was prepared using magnetron sputtering system at room temperature. XRD and Raman analysis of the double cermet coating confirmed that the Al2O3 in the solar absorber was amorphous. SEM showed that the surface of Pt-Al2O3 double cermet coating was characterized by a granular structure, while AFM analysis revealed a columnar-like structure with an average vertical dimension of 244±19 nm and a surface roughness of 16.3 nm. EDS analysis showed the coating was deposited without any detectable impurity. The coatings showed a combination of a high solar absorptance of 0.97 and low thermal emittance of 0.05, which is better than almost all Al2O3 based selective solar absorbers reported so far. An optical analysis revealed that these favourable properties arise from a combination of interference, scattering, and absorption effects that occur in different parts of the multilayer device structure.
