Abstract:

Fatal accidents happen throughout the world due to the impact crashes of small cars with the rear under-ride of the heavy vehicle especially the trucks. Under-ride guard of truck is one of the significant factors to be taken into consideration within the design and enhancement of truck chassis. The highest risk during collision of passengersâ?? car with a truck is the intrusion of passengersâ?? compartment under the heavy truck rear underride leading to fatal injuries to the passengers. Underride occurs because the truck rear end is relatively high off the ground with ineffective structure and large ground clearance of the attached rear guard. In this paper, a new rear underride protection device (RUPD) based on FMVSS 223 regulations has been developed to enhance the crashworthiness and reduce passenger compartment intrusion under heavy truck rear chassis during accidental crash. Finite element analyses software were used to examine the behavior of the new design of underride guard system for the heavy vehicle at different crash conditions. The simulation results showed that the new RUPD design enhanced the energy absorption and reduced the occupantâ??s car deceleration. The final design achieved the goal of decreasing the acceleration beyond the limits which is less than 60g and decreased the passenger compartment intrusion (PCI).
