Abstract:

Every year, a number of people suffer organ and tissue loss from accidents, birth defects and diseases like osteoporosis, congenital bone malformations and tumor resections. Therefore, there is a huge call for materials and technologies to ameliorate such maladies. In the present work, different amounts of Resin (RS) were incorporated with Chitosan-Hydroxyapatite (CH) to develop tri-constituent nanoconjugates CH-RS. With the aim to examine the applicability of the synthesized systems for bone implants applications, the prepared composites were evaluated for various physicochemical and biological studies such as SEM, TEM and bioactivity which are compared with the binary system. The in vivo characterizations were also performed in albino rats. The CH-RS and CH nanocomposites were prepared by co-precipitation method. The CH-RS nanocomposites showed needle like nanoparticles with rough surface morphology. The enhanced protein adsorption, ALP activity with excellent apatite formation ability compared to CH nanocomposites was also observed. Thus, CH-RS nanocomposite was examined as bare implant for the repair of critical-size calvarium defect in albino rat. The histopathological and radiological analysis indicated that CH-RS promoted the bone regeneration ability within two weeks post-implantation. These findings suggested that the CH-RS may find potential applications in the field of tissue engineering.
