Abstract:

Patient safety and enhancing quality of care is crucial not only for adults but its highly important for pediatrics and neonatology population. Various challenges are faced in the neonatology field by healthcare professionals working with these vulnerable tiny creatures. Therefore, five main domains of patient safety along with the challenges is illustrated below: Patient Safety Domain/Required organizational Practices: 1. Safety culture Challenges: Low reporting (e.g incidents related, KPI), Adverse events disclosure Improvements: Electronic and Anonymous Incident reporting, Continuous awareness 2. Communication Challenges: Poor Client verification (Real examples and cases), Dangerous abbreviations Improvements: Frequent surveys and audits are conducted, Frequent and structured awareness sessions for all employees, Recognition of high performing units, Focus on newly appointed healthcare professionals, Monitoring and standardizing abbreviations 3. Medication management Challenges: Inappropriate monitoring and use of antimicrobials, Inappropriate storage of concentrated electrolytes and dangerous medications, Inappropriate medication reconciliation leading to errors. Improvements: Antimicrobial stewardship program introduced, Electronic antimicrobial monitoring, Introducing Lean management, Introducing electronic medication reconciliation module. 4. Work-life Challenges: Challenges in client flow, Inadequate Patient safety training. Improvements: ER client flow project (4-hour maximum stay), Extensive annual training. 5. Infection control Challenges: Increase in infection rates. Improvements: Close monitoring of infections in NICU, Sepsis campaign & sepsis bundles. Introducing accreditation in the hospital has improved the quality of care, streamlined processes, high number of documentations introduced and reduced risks. Sustainability of the improvement introduced is maintained through incorporating the changes into the organizational strategic plan, mission, vision, values, objectives, and employee personal objectives.

Hiba Al Naabi, working as a Head of Accreditation Quality and Patient Safety Department in The Royal Hospital Ministry of Health Sultanate of Oman. The following are my qualifications MBA, BSc, Neonatology specialist, Certified Surveyor, certified patient safety instructor.
