Abstract:

Background: Psoriasis, along with its associated comorbidities, has been extensively studied in recent literature. However, preventive measures for psoriatic comorbidities and patient education on comorbid associations are lacking. This study aims to compare the impact of patient education and counseling sessions with routine outpatient department (OPD) consultations regarding comorbid associations of psoriasis. Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the impact of designed counseling sessions in comparison to routine consultations on patient awareness and knowledge regarding comorbid associations of psoriasis. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was employed at the Dermatology Department of Madinah Teaching Hospital in Faisalabad, Pakistan. Thirty psoriasis patients were selected using convenient sampling. A single-group pre-test and post-test study design was implemented, where patients who had undergone routine consultations also received counseling sessions. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 20, checking for data normality and utilizing paired sample t-tests to assess differences in mean pre-test and post-test values. Results: The results, analyzed using paired sample t-tests, were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that counseling sessions significantly improve patient satisfaction, awareness, knowledge, and perception regarding comorbid associations of psoriasis. Therefore, integrating counseling as a routine part of clinical consultations is recommended.
