The Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres (CRIJAF), one of the premiere institutes of Indian Council of Agri - cultural Research (ICAR) already submitted five patent applications viz. An improved seed sowing machine (Application no. 1367/KOL/2005), An improved process of large scale degumming of ramie fibre(Application no. 1036/KOL/2008), An im - proved herbicide applicator (Application no. 319/KOL/2010), Nail weeder (Application no. 386/KOL/2010) and A microbial consortium used in faster retting of jute and mesta (Application no. 418/KOL/2011) to the patent office, Kolkata. Out of five, three patentable technologies viz. An improved seed sowing machine, An improved herbicide applicator and Nail weeder have been commercialized and generating revenue as royalty. Patenting of these technologies is under process. The application for a trademark on CRIJAF SEED with the registration number 1893231 has been registered on 18/3/2011 to CRIJAF, Bar - rackpore. CRIJAF is selling jute seed to farmers using the trademark CRIJAF SEED and earning revenue. A MoU has been signed between CRIJAF and Pan Seeds Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata on 21.04.2011 for non-exclusive license for production and selling of certified seeds of extant jute variety, JRO 128, for a period of 5 years. Revenue has already been generated through supply of breeder seeds of this variety. As of 2012, 17 tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) and 19 white jute (C. capsularis L) varieties were released through All India Network Project (AINP) on Jute and Allied Fibres. Of them 14 varieties of tossa jute and 11 varieties of white jute were developed at CRIJAF. Applications of 19 extant and 7 new [JRO 204, JBO-2003-H (Ira), JRC 517, JRC 532, CO 58 (Sourav), Monalisa (RRPS 27-C-3) and JRO 2407 (Samapti)] jute varieties have been sent to PPV&FR Authority, New Delhi for their registration. Out of 19, ten extant jute varieties viz. JRO 128, JRO 66, JRO 8432, S-19, Monalisa (RRPS 27-C-3), JRC 80, JRC 698, Bidhan Pat 1, Bidhan Pat 2 and Bidhan Pat 3 have been selected for registration. The registration fee has already been sent to the Authority. Their registration is under process. DUS testing monitoring have been completed for 4 new jute varieties viz. JRO 204, JBO-2003-H (IRA), JRC 517 and JRC 532. All these four varieties evinced their distinctness over the reference varieties and their registration is under process. The new olitorius jute variety, Sourav (CO-58) is being tested for DUS for giving it protection.
