Abstract:

Torus Palatinus (TP) and Torus Mandibularis (TM) have been reported in most races, although the frequency of occurrence varies among races and between males and females. No data existregarding the prevalence of TP and TM in the Saudi population and its implication for treatmentplanning. The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence, size, shape and locationof oral tori among Saudi patients receiving treatment at King Abdelaziz University, Faculty of Dentistry (KAUFD). A total of 570 Saudi patients were randomly selected from those receivingdental treatment in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics at KAUFD. Threehundred ten female patients and 260 male patients were included. Of these patients, 6. 49% hadboth TP and TM, 19. 6% had only TP and 8. 6% had only TM. Women were more likely to havelarger TP than men, whereas men tended to have larger TM than women. In general, subjectswith larger TP or TM were older than those with smaller tori.
