Abstract:

Aim: To understand the prevalence of LD based on academic grades Patients and Methods: Indian students suffering from learning disabilities presented with dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia with poor academic performances. Sample Size: 40 cases of learning disability clinically diagnosed as per the DSM-5 criteria. Sampling Technique: simple random sampling. Inclusion Criteria: All types of Learning Disorder cases; Children of age group between 6 to 18 years; both sex; Patient from all socio-economic status. Exclusion Criteria: Children having LD secondary to any neurological or any sensory deficit. Detailed analysis of the 40 cases using informal assessment sheet for 6 consecutive months has been done along with their psychological evaluation (IQ testing). Results: In this study, to assess the prevalence of learning disabilities in students of India, 37.5% of students (15 patients) were identified in 4th grade and confirmed as having learning disability. Followed by 25% of students (10 patients) in 5th grade, then 15% in 6th grade (6 patients), 12.5% in 3rd grade (5 patients) and less patient found in 7th class (4 patient) i.e., 10% of students. Findings of current research highlight importance of assessment of prevalence of LDs in grades 4th to 7th. Conclusion: By analyzing findings of this study in light of previous researches and theoretical aspects, it is concluded that comparison at various academic levels helps to further diversify and rule out the minor and significant differences. In addition, majority of previous researches are conducted in elementary school students and adults in colleges. Therefore, previous literature lacks to provide findings in either of the directions in LDs across these academic grades. So, the current study finding could be considered as valuable addition to existing literature and unique to local context.
