Many infectious diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites are becoming great threatened to public due to unavailability of medicines, lack of awareness, the emergence of drug resistance mostly in developing countries. To overcome this problem, researchers are concentrating on plants having ethno-medicinal uses. Cassia tora Linn is an ayurvedic plant, belongs to the family Leguminaceae and sub-family Caesalpiniaceae. It has great medicinal value. Leaves of C. tora plant have ethnomedicinal use to heal wounds, skin diseases, leprosy, bronchitis and fever. There are already reports on antibacterial, antifungal, antiplasmodial activities leaves of C. tora plant. This study is the evidence of antimicrobial activities against pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella Typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella oxytoca as well as fungi like Aspergillus niger and Curvularia lunata. The present study has also revealed the effective anticancerous activity of hexane leaf extract of C. tora on MCF7 breast cancer cell line. Preliminary phytochemical tests with leaf and seed extract of C. tora have shown positive results for different bioactive molecules like carbohydrate, phenol, saponin, glycoside and protein. Phenol content in leaf and seed extract of C. tora has evaluated during this study and maximum (1300 μg/ml) of phenol present in ethyl acetate leaf extract which might be one of the responsible factor for antimicrobial activity.
