Persistence of fluopicolide on cauliflower under semi arid climatic conditions

Abstract:

Fluopicolide (2, 6-dichloro-N-[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridylmethyl] benzamide) is a compound belonging to the chemical class of acylpicolide fungicides. It is effective against a wide range of oomycetes (Phycomycete), late blight and controls downy mildew in cauliflower. A study was conducted at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bangalore, India by giving fluopicolide application to cauliflower twice at 2 concentrations i.e. 100 and 200 g a.i./ha as per good agricultural practices. Residues of fluopicolide in cauliflower were analyzed over a period of 30 days. QuEChERS analytical method used for sample extraction and purification was validated by studying the method validation parameters. The calibration curve was linear in the range of 0.003-1.0 ppm with R2>0.99. The LOD and LOQ were 0.003 ppm and 0.01 mg/kg, respectively. The Recoveries of fluopicolide in cauliflower at 0.01, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 μg/g level were in the range of 77.23-96.81%. The precision of the analytical method expressed as RSD was 8.32-14.19%. The MU was 10.9-19.7%, the range around which the true value lies. Residues of fluopicolide as initial deposits were 1.5 and 2.6 mg/kg. The residues in cauliflower dissipated with the half-life of 4.5 and 6 days. The pre-harvest interval (PHI) was 22.9 and 34.3 days. Field soil analyzed after 30 days was free from fluopicolide residues. Fluopicolide can be used on cauliflower in crop protection programs safely if the recommended PHI is followed. As the field soil was residue free it will not be carried over to the subsequent crops.

Gourishankar Manikrao completed his MSc (Organic Chemistry) in 2010 at Gulbarga University, Gulbarga, Karnataka. Currently he is working as research associate under the scheme Monitoring of pesticide residues at national level under Dr. Soudamini Mohapatra (Principal Scientist) at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore from 2011 till date. He registered for PhD in the year 2013 under the guidance of Dr. Soudamini Mohapatra (Principal Scientist). Currently he is working on Residue dynamics of fluopicolide in/on brassica vegetables and its degradation in soil.
