Patient experiences and satisfaction with onion anti-toothache effect

Abstract:

Background and Aim: According to literature some plants such as onion could have an anti-toothache effect. This study aimed to assess patient experiences and satisfaction with the onion anti-toothache effect. Methods: This randomized control trial study was conducted at Ardabil, Iran in June 2016. The patients with affected teeth who were referred to dentistry were selected and allocated randomly in two groups. Our sample size was 60 subjects and each group had 30 patients with a toothache. For one group cotton wool soaked in onion, the extract was used for a few minutes between the affected tooth and the second group ozonol was applied. The patient experiences and satisfaction with medications (PESaM) questionnaire was used to measure patient experiences and satisfaction with the onion anti-toothache effect compared to ozonol. The questionnaire had two parts of patient experience and patient satisfaction. The patient experience was with three domains of effectiveness (four items), side effects (four items), the difficulty of use (three items) and experience part assess satisfaction about effectiveness (one item), satisfaction about side effects (one item), satisfaction about ease of use (one item) and overall satisfaction (one item). and a final item to assess the relative importance of the three domains. Each item is scored on a numeric rating scale ranging from 1 (not at all satisfied) to 5 (very satisfied). The side effects and difficulty of use were scored inversely. Our study ethical cod was approved in Ardabil University of Medical Sciences (AUMS) with ethical cod number 9412 in March 2016. Results: The mean and standard deviation (SD) of the effectiveness, side effects, the difficulty of use was 18.5±0.70, 3±0.42 and 3±0.58 respectively. The mean and standard deviation (SD) of the satisfaction about effectiveness, side effects, the difficulty of use and overall satisfaction were 5±0.05, 4.5±0.04, 5±0 and 5±0 respectively. Additionally, the mean and standard deviation (SD) of the importance of effectiveness, side effects and ease of use was 4.5±0.17. Conclusion: Based on the reality extracted from our study, patients were more satisfied with the effectiveness, side effects and ease of use onion extract on the affected tooth. Our study showed that the onion extract is more effective, without side effects and can be used easily and simply.
