Asteroids came recently under the media spotlight due to the announcements of several ventures aiming to exploit the mineral riches thereon. This paper will analyze some of the juridical aspects of asteroidal resource exploitation, from their legal status to the legality of establishing property rights, as well as the lawfulness of exploitation methods in their environmental, security and liability aspects.
Virgiliu Pop works as a Researcher at the Romanian Space Agency where he is active in the areas of space law (especially outer space property rights), space and society, and space education and outreach. In 2008, he published ?Who Owns the Moon? Extraterrestrial Aspects of Land and Mineral Resources Ownership? with Springer, a work that generated interest both in academic and mass media circles-such as New York Times Magazine. In 2012, he was part of the team that established the Scientific Preparatory Academy for Cosmic Explorers (SPACE).
