Abstract:

The development of nanostructured carriers for drug delivery, aiming to improve stability and to increase bioavailability, is a challenge covering a number of applications, ranging from the targeted delivery of drugs, the permeation of hydrophilic compounds to cellular internalization of particles. The topical nanocarriers, for example, can modulate transdermal drug diffusion by either affecting superficial drug activity or drug partitioning in or drug diffusion through the skin. Among the vehicles already investigated we can mention polymeric nanospheres and nanocapsules, nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, self-assembled drug delivery, chitosan nanoparticles, polymeric nanofibers, drug nanocrystals, colloidal nanocarriers among others. A wide variety of micro and nanoencapsulation procedures have been developed such as oil-in-water (o/w) solvent evaporation, water-oil-water (w/o/w) double emulsion, polymerization, high pressure homogenization, electrospinning techniques and microfluidic devices. Accordingly, our group has been devoting our attention to the development of nanostructured systems for encapsulation of active ingredients and characterization of their physical and chemical properties such as physical stability and ability to encapsulate model hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules. Different examples of nanoencapsulation platforms are presented in this work such as nanostructured sun protection agent, colloidal nanocarriers based on starch, carnauba wax nanostructured lipid carries, rifampicin nanostructured, polymeric nanofiber drug-loaded. These systems can be used in a wide range of products from pharmaceutical, cosmetic, veterinary, food, agrochemical to paints and coating areas.
