It is essential that all neonates are examined and categorized as per risk status for better outcome. There may be some danger signs indicating need appropriate prompt treatment. During the talk some common and important issues will be discussed. If a newborn fails to breath after birth, it will require immediate steps for restoring the vials. There could be other issues like respiratory distress, acute life-threatening event, severe jaundice, convulsions, hypothermia, bleeding, sepsis, abdominal distension with persistent vomiting etc. which require early diagnosis and management. Important management steps for these common conditions will be discussed. The pneumonic ‘THE MISFITS’ ( Trauma, Hypoxia, Hypovolemia, Endocrine disturbances like congenital adrenal hyperplasia/ thyrotoxicosis, Metabolic abnormalities like electrolyte imbalance, Inborn errors of metabolism, Sepsis, Formula mishap, Intestinal problems like neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis/ intussusception, Toxins and Seizures) can be used for remembering these neonatal issues. Early diagnosis and appropriate adequate treatment will improve the outcome.
