Abstract:

In recent years, the nanotechnology has developed fast especially in carbon nano-materials. The carbon materials like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene have received tremendous interest recently due to their unique properties, like extraordinarily high Youngâ??s modulus, electron mobility and surface area. Due to this reason, the carbon nano-materials have received tremendous research interest as the reinforcing filler to enhance the corresponding properties of the functional polymer materials. In the present study, the graphene filled alginic acid hydrogel was prepared by using the ionic acid as the compatibilizer and calcium chloride as the crosslinker. The prepared hydrogel was then used to adsorb a varierty of dyes in aqueous solutions. Due to the presence of the graphene, the hydrogel showed much enhanced adsorbing performance to the dyes compared with the neat alginic acid hydrogel. The adsorption kinetics of the hydrogel was also studied. The results obtained in the present study show that prepared hydrogel has application potentials to be as the adsorbent for water purifications.
