Flowcharts for easy periodontal diagnosis based on the 2018 new periodontal classification

Abstract:

Statement of the Problem: The 2018 periodontal classification has been released, however, it is challenging for clinicians especially for the dental students to apply the published information in practice. This study aimed to propose user-friendly flowcharts for easy periodontal diagnosis based on the criteria proposed in the 2018. periodontal classification. Methodology & Theoretical Orientation: Proceedings from the World Workshop of the Periodontal and Perio-implant Diseases and Conditions were reviewed by two periodontists. The information based on case definitions and clinical criteria was summarized into 3 flow charts for making periodontal diagnosis. Findings: A diagnostic flow chart was created for 3 mostly common periodontal conditions; health, gingivitis and periodontitis. Additionally, flow charts were proposed for diagnosis for periodontitis severity and risk of progression by staging and grading. Probing depth was the first clinical parameter to categorize the type of diseases. Subsequently, bleeding on probing, radiographic bone loss/clinical attachment loss and history of periodontal treatment were further added for making a proper diagnosis. Clinical cases were given to demonstrate the use of the simplified proposed flow charts. Conclusion & Significance: The proposed diagnostic flowcharts are the user-friendly tool to assist clinicians to perform an initial screening and diagnosis based on the 2018 newly proposed periodontal disease classification

Biography :

Dr. Pimchanok Sutthiboonyapan received her DDS from Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand in 2012 and her MS with Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry, Ann Arbor, USA in 2017. Dr.Sutthiboonyapan is an American Board-certified in Periodontolgy and Dental Implant Surgery. She is currently a full-time lecture at the Department of Periodontology, Chulalongkorn University. Her research work is mostly focusing on periodontal diagnostic tools and periodontal soft tissue. She was the recipient of several awards, including the the Russell W. Bunting Student Research Award from the Russell W. Bunting Periodontal Society and the Outstanding Soft Tissue Grafting and/or Esthetics Case Award from the Michigan Periodontal Association.
