Evaluation of oral Candida in patients with dentures in intensive care unit

Abstract:

Objective: To evaluate the portation of Candida spp. in mouth dentures. Materials & Methods: There were 50 patients selected from the unit of intensive therapy of the University Hospital in the Universidad Abierta Interamericana located in Argentina. There were selected patients with removable dentures hospitalized by polytraumatism and with equal antibiotic scheme, without intubation. We considered age and time of internment and realized a clinical examination to determine injuries in mucous mouth, periodontal status and evaluated the conditions of the denture, including time of use, habits of rest, habits of hygiene and adjustment of the same ones. Then, we took a sample in the zone of the palate with hyssop in the middle of Stuart and took an additional consistent sample in the zone that he contacts the mucous court one. Results: In the mouth cavity and denture, they presented equal species of Candida albicans in the patients hospitalized up to 15 days. The difference was statistically significant in those with 15 days of internment in which the species that were more prevalent were Candida dubliniensis, Candida parapsilosis and Candida krusei, (p=0.03). The periodontal condition was decreasing in a manner that was directly proportional to the time of internment. Conclusion: In our study, a significant association was observed between patients with artificial denture in Intensive Care Unit and Candida species. In the moderate and serious forms of the disease, they were exposed to conditions where the mouth is not cleaned, use of intervention objects that will keep it opened and on occasions when it dries due to the decrease of the saliva when the mouth is in opened for an excessive time.
