Abstract:

With the growing development of oil extaction industrial activities and disregard of environmental requirements in recent decades has led to entrance significant amounts of hydrocarbon pollutants into the environment, especially the aquatic environment, through the disposal of sewage, discharge of industrial waste, plants, and oil tankers accident. The existence of these contaminants causes environmental degradation and the incidence of many diseases. Hence, it is essential to remove these types of contaminants. Accordingly, the need for construction and produce contaminant absorbent to collect these pollutions effectively is challenging. In this study, a polyurethane sponge was coated with an advanced coating comprising of phenol formaldehyde resin (PFR) and magnesium stearate (MgSt) nanoparticles by the cost-effective dip-coating method on several polyurethane sponge with different density. This coating has altered the wettability of unmodified sponge from strongly hydrophilic conditions to strongly hydrophobic conditions. Wettability alteration yielded an ultra-light absorber with satisfying results that can absorb hydrocarbon pollutants over 50 times of its weight. The first stage was to synthesized magnesium stearate from magnesium hydroxidepowder and stearic acid via one-step solvothermal method. Afterward, unmodified sponge was subjected to ultrasonic in ehanol solution to remove any pollutant, and then was coated by nanoparticles with phenol formaldehyde solution as the sticker agent. After coating the absorber, contact angle determination and absorbance capacity experiments were performed for each sponge to determine the performance of the absorber.
