Abstract:

Smoking kills 8 million users per year, a majorly preventable lifestyle habit, yet smoking has more than 1.30 billion people globally spending billions of dollars to deteriorate their health. There are more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia and among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer (Health, 17). (MPOWER) is a policy package of advice by WHO to countries, including six policies to control tobacco use, intended to help in the country-level implementation of effective interventions, providing a roadmap to reverse the global tobacco epidemic (Organization, 2022). Costa Rica’s Interventions against smoking have placed the central American country in the first position on the (MPOWER) list out of 23 countries, with a smoking population of less than 10%,high sin taxes , strict public smoking laws, and education of the population on the dangers of smoking, are some of the strategies used which played all a role . This discussion critically explores those interventions, their complexities and consequences both intended and unintended, and why they could be used to deal with smoking as part of public health policy to combat smoking to prevent smoking related cancers.
