Digital oilfield (DOF) is a concept in which a real time technology is used to gather and analyze data related to oil and gas fields. It aims at optimizing time and resources, thus helping in cost reduction. Terabytes of data gets generated by the help of sensors and hardwares which are used in well for recording parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow and other. This data is analyzed and organized to generate a meaningful pattern. Aggressive initiatives in enhancement of design, placement and use of digital oilfields have been made in the past decade and disruptive changes are expected in future years. Some major DOF service types implemented includes Real time data monitoring, Performance optimization, Computer-aided hydraulic fracturing, Remote visualization, Predictive analysis, Field communication services and various others. The concept of digital oilfield is expanding horizontally capturing all the aspects of operations and engineering. In coming years, these aspects are expected to grow vertically including accounting, human resource planning and framing management strategy. Data analytics and big data have become pivotal. Leading Companies such as Shell and Statoil are successfully implementing digital oilfield technology to stay ahead of the industry requirements. The leading service providers in this industry include Baker Hughes, Kongsberg Oil and Gas Technologies and, Schlumberger among others. According to HIS-CERA, ??Digital oilfield-related implementation may result in up to 8% higher production rates, as well as up to 25 % in operating cost savings and 2 to 4 % lower project costs?. Digital technology has a great potential for the resource scarce industry. On the other hand the technology also poses threats, as the increasing dependence on data the industry, attracts cyber-attacks.
