Abstract:

Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer in pediatrics in the world, and it represents 30% of all cancer cases in children in Saudi Arabia. This study was conducted to provide clinical characteristic and outcomes of children in King Abulaziz Medical City (KAMC) in Riyadh. Methods: Clinical data and outcomes of all diagnosed patients from 2000 to 2010 were retrospectively collected using a customized built data collection tool at KAMC and were entered by using SPSS. Results: Fifty patients were included with a mean age of 4.65 years, 58% were male. The majority of the patients were found to have Pre-B cell type 82%, while 18% only had T-cell type. Thirty one patients (62%) were in the standard risk group, 18 patients (36%) at high risk and one patient (2%) at very high risk group. Out of 50 patients, 9 patients achieved complete remission. However, the remission status found to be M1 in 46 patients (93.9%). The overall survival and the event free survival were calculated to be 92% and 74% respectively with 4 deaths (8%) due to different complications. Conclusion: Our study is the first 10 years experience retrospective study in a single tertiary institution in Saudi Arabia. The clinical characteristics of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia were similar to those reported in literature. After comparing our results with the developed and developing country, we found that the protocols used for treatment were effective in improving the survival rate to be comparable to the results in developed countries. Treating children in tertiary hospital with specialized pediatric oncology service, using will defined protocols, led to improving the survival to be comparable to the result in developed countries.
