Candida spp. in periodontal pockets of women who take combination oral contraceptives

Abstract:

Objective: To evaluate the presence of Candida spp. in periodontal patients taking oral contraceptives and combined with different progestogens. Materials & Methods: Experimental group: Women with periodontal disease consuming since 1-3 years other COCs. Control group: women with periodontal disease who do not consume them. 200 women with moderate or severe chronic periodontitis who still have menstrual cycles, entering the Hospital Dr. Diego Thompson, serving Gynecology Periodontal indices were recorded and serial radiographic periapical. The sample with Gracey curette type in the stock upper and lower central incisors and first molars I was taken and a pool that was placed in Eppendorf tube with sterile saline solution was performed. Conventional microbiological techniques were performed. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using Chi square test. Results: A statistically significant difference between the carrying of Candida spp. in women who consumed contraceptives and those who did not (p = 0.03) was found. C. albicans were found in descending order, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, which is not consumed and C dubliniensis, C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis in those who consumed. Regarding progestogens used (Nomegestrol acetate, drospirenone, Levonorgestrel, Gestodene, Dienogest and Cyproterone) no differences were observed in the prevalence of Candida spp. found. Conclusion: Women who took contraceptives are carriers of different Candida spp. to not consume. In the sample, studied differences with different progestogens are not observed.
