Abstract:

Four water samples were in respective cases collected from river Oadaji Northern River (NR) designated NR1-NR4 and river Kantou the Southern River (SR) designated SR1-SR4 both of Nasarawa State University main campus land area. The samples were analyzed for some physicochemical parameters such as pH, turbidity, temperature, nitrate, hardness, magnesium, total dissolved solutes (TDS), sulphate, trace metals and coliform bacteria for microbiological attributes. The results obtained show the temperature ranged between 23°C-25°C in NR and 24°C-27°C for river SR. The pH ranged from 6.26-6.45 in RN and 6.20-6.29 in SR, nitrate ranged from 4.4-25 mg/l in NR and 2.5-6.9 mg/l in SR. The total hardness ranged from 180-520 mg/l in NR and 180-200 mg/l in SR, chloride ranged from 12.4-20 mg/l in NR and 10.4-20.0 mg/l in SR. TDS ranged from 20.4-58.0 mg/l in river NR and 24.0-34.6 mg/l in SR, sulfate ranged from 3-13 mg/l in NR and 8-15 mg/l in SR. Analysis for metal ions was carried out using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) for metals such as calcium, magnesium, lead copper, zinc ion, potassium, and sodium with results showing the presence of these ions in very minute proportions. Microbiological analysis shows the presence of coliform. The usability of water from these rivers for domestic purposes is not recommended, hence proper treatment is needed before they are consumed or put to any reasonable domestic applications.
