Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common types of esophageal cancer. It usually occurs in cells that make up the lining of the esophagus. SCC tends to be more aggressive than other types of esophageal cancers because it can spread quickly through tissue and lymph nodes in the area. Standardized diagnosis for SCC includes imaging tests such as Xrays, CT scans, MRIs, or PET scans. Adenocarcinoma is another type of esophageal cancer that usually starts in glandular cells at the lower end of the esophagus near where it connects with the stomach. As with SCCs, standardizing diagnosis for adenocarcinomas includes imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, MRIs or PET scans as well as endoscopies to directly view areas inside the esophagus.
