About the Study

Dextromethorphan (DXM) is often abused at high doses in adolescence to generate euphoria and visual and auditory hallucinations. Dextromethorphan is used to relieve coughs caused by colds and the flu. Do not use if you have a chronic cough caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema, or if you have an unusually large amount of mucus or phlegm with the cough. Dextromethorphan relieves cough by acting directly on the center of the cough in the brain. DXM might be the safest drug as it is sold over the counter but large amounts of medicine can cause dangerous side effects like seizures, brain damage, and sometimes even death. Hyperthermia is one of the dangerous side effects of DXM which further shows an impact of extremely high fever.

Focal seizures begin in one area of the brain; even it may spread to other parts of the body. For all kinds of seizures, the most common treatment is taking DXM medication. The health care professionals may also recommend some diet therapy, nerve stimulation, or surgery, depending on the seizures' characteristics. This medicine is available without a prescription. When deciding to take a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. Dextromethorphan (DXM) is an over-the-counter cough suppressant commonly found in cold Medications. Dextromethorphan is available as liquid-filled capsules, chewable tablets, dissolution strips, solutions (liquid), sustained-release suspensions (long-acting), and oral lozenges. Take this medicine as needed or as directed by the doctor, usually every 4-12 hours. If you have an upset stomach, take it with food or milk. Use the drug solution meter to measure the dose of the drug solution. Do not use a household spoon as you may not be able to get the correct dose. If you are taking a suspension, shake the product well before measuring the dose. The dosage is based on the product that is taken, age, medical condition, and the patient’s response to treatment. While using this medicine for selftreatment (without a doctor's prescription), follow the specific dosing instructions on the package to find the appropriate dose by considering the proper age of the patient. If the doctor tells you to take this medicine daily, take it regularly to get the maximum effect. Take it at the same time each day to make it easier to remember. Slight drowsiness/dizziness, nausea, or vomiting may occur while using this medicine. In rare cases, regular doses may cause some people to experience severe drowsiness/dizziness. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell the doctor or pharmacist immediately. In most cases, people who are taking this medicine have not experienced any serious side effects. Very severe allergic reactions to this drug are rare.

However, if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as rash, itching/swelling (especially face/tongue/ throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing, immediately consult the doctor for a better health condition. Do not use this medicine during pregnancy unless it is necessary. Drug interactions can alter the action of the drug and increase the risk of serious side effects. Some products that may interact with this drug are other cough medicines such as hydrocodone, over-thecounter cough / cold medicine, and rolapitant. Over-the-counter cough and cold combination products, including products containing dextromethorphan, can cause serious side effects or death in infants. Do not give these products to children under 4 years old. When giving these products to children 4-11 years old, be careful and follow the packaging instructions carefully. Put this medicine in the package it came in, close it tightly, and keep it out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excessive heat and humidity, and do not store it near or inside the bathroom. Unwanted medicines should be disposed of in a special way to prevent pets, children, and others from taking them. However, this medicine should not be flushed down the toilet. While taking this medicine, drink extra fluids to get rid of congestion and lubricate the throat.

Talk to the doctor if symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment, or if you have a fever with a headache, cough, or skin rash. The dosage of this drug will vary from patient to patient. The amount of medicine taken by the patient will depend on the strength of the medicine. Avoid drinking alcohol as it may increase some of the side effects of dextromethorphan. This medicine can cause side effects that can affect your thinking or reactions that are done daily. Be careful when driving or doing things that require you to wake up and be vigilant. Cough suppressants are usually taken only when needed and may not have a dosing schedule. Do not use certain medicines at or around the time of eating or consuming certain types of food, as interactions can occur. The use of alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions.
