Zhiyong Zhao

Zhiyong Zhao received his Ph.D. degree in Developmental Biology from University of Manchester in United Kingdom, and completed his postdoctoral training at Pennsylvania State University and Yale University School of Medicine in craniofacial and cardiovascular development. Now Dr. Zhao is an Assistant Professor at University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Zhao is a member of the Society of Developmental Biology, American Diabetes Association, and American Heart Association. Dr. Zhao served as a reviewer for a number of scientific journals, member of CDC’s Special Emphasis Panel on "Scientific, Technical and Operational Services for Epidemiology, Surveillance and Laboratory Programs”, and ad hoc member of NIH study section.
Dr. Zhao’s research interests include cellular and molecular mechanisms in cardiovascular development and birth defects caused by maternal diabetes mellitus (diabetic embryopathy) and tobacco smoking. His research mainly focuses on development of therapeutic strategies to prevent embryonic malformations in pregnancies affected by diabetes and environmental toxins.
