After graduating from Oxford University Dr Shanmugam received her medical degree from Imperial College School of Medicine in London England She completed residency on the St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospital’s training program and gained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians before immigrating to the United States She completed internal medicine residency and rheumatology fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital and joined the faculty in the Division of Rheumatology Immunology and Allergy in 2007 Dr Shanmugam was the recipient of the American College of Rheumatology Distinguished Fellow Award and the American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation Physician Scientist Development Award She graduated from the NIH funded K30 District of Columbia Clinical Research Training Consortium program in 2009 Dr Shanmugam collaborates with the Center for Wound Healing to study immune mediated ulcers and delayed wound healing She was funded by the American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation to conduct the Connective Tissue Disease Leg Ulcer Etiology CLUE Study In conjunction with the Lombardi Cancer Center and Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center Dr Shanmugam has been investigating patients with joint complaints associated with malignancy She recently completed the CIRAS study to investigate the Clinical Immunologic and Radiographic features of the Aromatase Inhibitor Arthralgia Syndrome This project was funded through a Department of Medicine Development Award and the Swing for the Cure Dr Shanmugam is an ad hoc reviewer for Arthritis Care and Research and the International Journal of Rheumatology She also serves on the Professional Meetings Committee of the American College of Rheumatology
