Vera P. Simovska, MD., PhD is an Associate Professor of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at the Faculty of Technology and Technical Sciences, a Visiting Professor of Health Management at the Faculty of Management, Lecturer of Sports Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and a researcher at the Nutrition Research Unit, Public Health Institutions- Skopje, Macedonia. Associate Professor Simovska, MD., PhD began her academic career studying Medical sciences at State University of Skopje and the University of Belgrade. She has completed MD. (1979), and a specialisation of Sports Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Skopje (1989) and a subspecialisation of Nutrition hygiene for healthy and sick persons at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade (1993). From 1990 until 2001, as a researcher, Dr. Simovska has worked in several research projects conducting a clinicalepidemiological study of cardiovascular risk factors in families and early diagnosis in children (Subspecialist thesis, 1992) and investigating the effects of diet therapy and programmed physical activity on some atherogenic risk factors in abdominal obese subjects (PhD. thesis, 2001). From 2001 until now she was a National coordinator of several programs covered by the World Health Organization: “CINDI program for noncommunicable disease prevention and health promotion” (2001- 2005), “Quitï⬦Win” (2006-2009), “Move for Health” (2003-2004) and “HEPA Europe” (2006- ). As an expert-consultant, she has worked in the National Committees for “Advancement of Healthcare system reforms” (2009-2011) and “Health Promotion” (2001-2004) at the Ministry of Health of Macedonia as well as in the European Commission: FP7-KBBE “Food, health and wellbeing” (2008) and Europe Aids: “Support for prevention of NCD in developing countries” (2010). As President of National Organization for Health Promotion “HEPA Macedonia”, an associative partner of several projects of the European Commission, she has worked in Public Health/”EUNAAPA” (2006-2008), FP7/Health “Why We Age” (2009) and EACEA/Tempus „Improving Academia-Industry: FOODLINKS” (2010-2012). Currently, Dr. Simovska is an active member of EACEA/Erasmus”DIETS2”- Dietitians Improving Education and Training Standards (2011-2013) working to establish specific second and third cycle competences for dietitians in Europe. Dr. Simovska has published 8 books and book chapters, 25 manuscripts and more than 80 abstracts and presentations.
Dr. Simovska’s research is primarily in the areas of diet and dietary components in chronic noncomunicable diseases management, prevention and treatment in conjunctions with programmed physical activity. In area of public health, she is focused on nutrition, biological and lifestyle NCD’s risk factors survey, identification and treatment, NCD’s prevention and health promotion strategies and programmes. For past 10 years, her research interest has focused on links between obesity, diet therapy and programmed physical activity, nutrition issues including diabetes, lipid disorders and cardio-metabolic risk reduction.
