M. Loredana Marcovecchio is a Clinical Scientist at the Department of Paediatrics, University of Chieti (Italy) and a Consultant Paediatrician at the University Hospital of Chieti. She graduated in Medicine at the University of Chieti in 2004 and obtained her PhD in Physiopathology of Metabolism (2009) and MD in Paediatrics (2014) at the same University. she spent a long training period (2005-2008) at the University Department of Paediatrics in Cambridge. She returned to the same Institution between 2010-2012 as a visiting post-doctoral clinical research fellow. During the period spent in Cambridge she was involved in several cohort studies looking at early risk factors for the development of microalbuminuria in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
Over the last years, Dr Marcovecchio has also focused on another research area, represented by childhood obesity, mainly in relation to the cardio-metabolic complications associated with this condition. Her research activity has led to a large number of publications in high impact journals. She has also extensively presented her work at international scientific meetings. In 2014, she was awarded the L’Oreal-Unesco Italy award ‘For Women in Science’, in recognition of her previous work in the field of medical research.
