Biography

Katherine M. Keyes is an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.  She received her doctorate in Epidemiology from Columbia University in June of 2010, after completion of her MPH degree in 2006.  Katherine’s research focuses on life course epidemiology with particular attention to psychiatric disorders. Her work explores novel study designs to assess the impact of environmental and social determinants of mental health outcomes.Her empirical research has documented a narrowing gender gap in the prevalence and course of alcohol abuse and dependence over time.  She has also examined methodological issues in age-period-cohort effect estimation for common health outcomes, including obesity, breast cancer, and substance disorders. Katherine has explored the effects of early life exposures on adolescent and adult health, documenting long-term consequences of child maltreatment on internalizing and externalizing psychiatric disorders in adulthood and the sensitizing effects of childhood maltreatment on exposures to stress in adulthood.  Katherine’s work has been funded by the National Institute for Drug Abuse and has received multiple national awards.
