Dr. Genyan Yang is currently working in the Division of Blood Disorders, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in USA.
Research Interest
Dr. Genyan Yang Research Interest is in non-malignant blood disorders (NMBDs), including venous thromboembolism (VTE), sickle cell disease (SCD), thalassemia and hemophilia. NMBDs represent a major public health issue that is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates across different ethnic and age groups, and impose substantial economic and societal burden in the United States and worldwide. Infection is tied to multiple NMBDs through transmission of bloodborn pathogens during blood transfusions or usage of blood-derived products. Some NMBDs such as SCD confers an increased susceptibility to infection due to a crippled immune system (e.g. impaired splenic function or defects in complement activation). Infection and inflammation, on the other hand, could pose a great risk for some NMBDs such as VTE. Understanding the mechanism behind the susceptibility to and contributing factors for infection can contribute to the improvement of survival and quality of life among patients with NMBDs.
