Biography

Dr. Khoo has been working as an Assistant Professor under Arthropod-Borne and Infectious Diseases Laboratory, Colorado State University.

Research Interest

Dr. Khoo’s long term research interests are in the evolution of complex biological systems, specifically symbiosis. Particularly, her interest is in the symbiotic intracellular bacteria Wolbachia that are present in many species of insects including mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are vectors of human diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and filariasis. Research has demonstrated that Wolbachia can be used as a biological control agent of mosquitoes through mosquito population suppression and reduced vector competence. Dr. Khoo is interested in elucidating the evolutionary relationship among Wolbachia, arthropod-borne viruses, and mosquitoes and capitalizing on this relationship to reduce the transmission of mosquito-borne infectious diseases.
