Biography

Dr. Anthony Tsarbopoulos is currently an Associate Professor at the Pharmacology Department, University of Athens Medical School. He received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from University of Athens and obtained his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at Michigan State University. He was a Senior Research Fellow & Research Assistant Professor at the Mayo Medical School (Pharmacology Department), and then a Group Leader in the Structural Chemistry Department of Schering-Plough Research Institute. Upon his return to Greece he was appointed Director of the Bioanalytical Department at the GAIA Research Center/The Goulandris Natural History Museum, where he has established a state-­of-­the-­art analytical laboratory and an active research program focused on assessing the effects of various environmental factors on food and human health. From 2003‐2012 he was in the Faculty of the Pharmacy Department, University of Patras, and in 2013 he joined the Pharmacology Department at the Medical School, University of Athens.

Research Interest

• Study protein conformations and protein-­ligand interactions by novel Mass Spectrometry (MS) methodologies. In particular, provide insights in the protein aggregation processes involved in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), with an emphasis on discovering novel molecules of natural origin and/or semi-­synthetic analogues thereof possessing anti-­neurodegenerative properties.
• Pharmacokinetic, Bioavailability Studies of drugs and bioactive compounds.
• Structure elucidation of bioactive compounds derived from plants, and their potential exploitation towards the development of new and innovative pharmaceuticals and other therapeutic substances.
