    Thalassemia Distribution Based on Screening Programs in the Population of the East Malaysian State of Sabah

    Objective: The aim of the study is to examine the distribution of thalassemia in the indigenous population of Sabah where thalassemia is most prevalent in Malaysia based on screening programs carried out at the public health centers. Method: A total of 645 blood samples were obtained from all over Sabah for thalassemia screening in the month of May 2013. High performance Liquid Chromatography and Capillary Electrophoresis were used for analyzing the hemoglobin subtypes. Result: 94% of the total sample came from voluntary screening offered at primary care level and various government-promoted programs while the other 6% were cascade screening.
