The Place of Women in Higher Education Management: A Ghanaian Perspective

Women in higher education management in Ghana are an elite group among women. Nevertheless there is abundant evidence that they are disproportionately in lower grades and less secure positions than their male counterparts. There are longstanding inequities which appear to have been met with complacency rather than commitments to bring about change. The aims of the study were to: determine the percentage of women in decisionmaking academic and administrative positions, to explore the perceptions, feelings and opinions of a sample of these women about their experiences in management, and to obtain a broad base of opinions and ideas from which to develop strategies that would increase the representation of women in higher education management. A survey research design was employed to gather data for this study.
