Knowledge of Parents of Mild Intellectually Challenged Children towards Imparting Sexual Health Education

A study was conducted to assess the knowledge of parents of mild intellectually challenged children towards imparting sexual health education. Rating scale developed and standardized by the investigator was used to assess the knowledge of parents of mild intellectually challenged children towards imparting sexual health education. The samples were selected using a purposive sampling procedure. Further the special schools catering to the educational needs of the intellectually challenged children in Bangalore city was identified for the study. 79 fathers and 102 mothers of mild intellectually challenged children aged between 09-17 years were selected for the present study. Further they samples were subdivided into experimental group and control. The intervention program was given to the parents of experimental group. Descriptive statistical analysis has been carried out in the present study. Data reveals that there was significant difference between the sample of control group and experimental group. Parents of experimental group had developed knowledge towards imparting sexual health education this reveals that intervention programme had positive influence on the knowledge of parents of experimental group. Further parents of control group did not shown any change in their knowledge towards imparting sexual health education to their mild intellectually challenged children. The study highlighted the need to orient and sensitize the parents to the importance of imparting sexual health education to their challenged children.
