Antioxidants have played a pivotal role in the treatment of various diseases like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases. The major goal of this review is to hypothesize the treatment strategy by the use of antioxidants for correcting the molecular defects found in β-thalassemia major. In that vein, we are trying to determine the mechanism of action and the role of two most potent antioxidants viz. Lycopene and Betalain in correcting the molecular defects of β-thalassemia major. The strategy discussed here can be utilized for the purpose of treatment of molecular anomalies in β-thalassemia major, which is on the line of enhancing the γ-globin gene expression by augmenting the cAMP level in the erythroid cells.
